It is no coincidence that Baja is referred to as the ‘city of water’: both the Sugovica and the Danube flow through the town, lending it a special charm. The proximity of the water invites visitors to go swimming, walking, fishing or to try their hand at a wide variety of water sports. This town, with a population of around 40,000, is home to approximately forty listed monuments or historically significant buildings. For centuries, Baja has been home to Hungarian, German, Serbian and Croatian communities. This cultural diversity is reflected in the architecture, traditions, museums and exhibitions, as well as in the town’s numerous events. Trinity Square, paved in the shape of a four-leaf clover, offers visitors an unforgettable sight. It is here that the famous Baja fish soup cooking festival is held every year.
The historic city centre enchants visitors with its carefully restored façades, behind which lie cosy cafés, ice-cream parlours, small shops and tempting garden restaurants. The cobbled promenade is a wonderful place to soak up the town’s Mediterranean atmosphere. From spring to autumn, a sightseeing train runs, offering the most comfortable way to see Baja’s sights.
